Across the country, Habitat for Humanity volunteers are working to advance public policy positions that support the mission of affordable housing, both locally and nationally. Guided by a strict policy of non-partisan engagement, volunteers from our affiliate are already working with other affordable housing coalitions and meeting with elected officials.
Last year Habitat for Humanity launched the “Cost of Home,” a nationwide advocacy campaign, and has already seen success through its national grassroots network. Volunteers in local Habitat affiliates are getting to work, many through advocacy committees. Habitat for Humanity of Washington State has been a strong voice in Olympia for several years. Policy director Ryan Donohue is spearheading Habitat’s state legislative agenda by engaging volunteers and affiliates from around the state. By bringing together our efforts we learn from one another’s challenges and successes, and share a wealth of knowledge.
Habitat EJC’s Board has established an Advocacy Committee to lead the local efforts. Chaired by Lura Sheahan, a veteran of legislative advocacy and an HFHEJC board member, the committee invites local volunteers and supporters to join Habitat’s citizen advocacy effort. To learn more, subscribe to our dedicated email list. You’ll receive timely “calls to action” that alert you when issues are coming before decision makers (city council, county commissioners, state legislators or our congressional delegation). That way you’ll be able to contact your elected officials and share your support for policies and actions that promote affordable housing.

Together we can make a difference.
