Global Tithe Partnership
As part of Habitat’s International Tithe Program, Habitat of East Jefferson County has continued its financial commitment to support programs in Lesotho and Ethiopia. In October 2016, Nepal was added as a global partner. Our local efforts make a difference internationally by providing support to areas in critical need of housing solutions.
To date our affiliate has contributed over $500,000 to improve the lives of families in our tithe partner countries. Read more here.
Our Global Tithe Partners
Lesotho
Lesotho is one of the least developed countries in the world. The poverty level is estimated to have remained high at 34.7% in 2022, according to the World Bank. The HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in Lesotho is 25% in the adult population (15-49 years), the second highest in the world. As a result, 27% of children under the age of 18 are orphans.
Nepal
Habitat Nepal, established in 1997, has served over 70,000 households and built a network of valued local partners through which it implements its housing programs. Since 2015, reconstruction has been the primary focus of Habitat Nepal, directing funding and technical support to the earthquake-affected central region, followed by shelter initiatives in the flood-devastated lowlands of the East and West.
Ethiopia
About 70% of housing units in Ethiopia require total replacement. Most homes are made of wood and mud and have cracked walls, leaking roofs and dirt floors. Only one-quarter of houses have two or more rooms.
A letter from our global partner in Nepal
As we begin the new fiscal year, we want to thank you with a story, one moment where your support mattered the most. On 26 August, a flash flood tore through Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts in Central Nepal, sweeping away homes, roads and entire families within hours.
For those who survived, the days that followed meant exposure – no roof, no walls, no safe place to sleep while they grieved and searched for the missing. Because of your continued tithe support, we moved fast. Within days, we mobilized 500 emergency shelter kits – tarpaulins, rope, blankets, mats, and foam to displaced families in the affected areas, giving them an immediate, dignified place to shelter while they began to process the unimaginable. This wasn’t possible because of one appeal. It became possible because your support stood with us ready year-round, so we could move while the need was at its peak.
