Build with Habitat

Thank you for your interest in volunteering to build with Habitat for Humanity of East Jefferson County. Volunteers are the key to getting families into affordable, decent homes. No experience is necessary! Construction volunteers receive a 30-minute orientation at the Habitat office, followed by on-the-job training at the construction site.

General Schedule:

  • 9:00 am Arrive, check-in, safety briefing, and task assignments
  • 10:30 am Morning break
  • 12:00 pm Noon Lunch break (bring your own lunch unless we let you know otherwise)
  • 3:00 pm Start clean-up
  • 3:30 pm End of the work day

Attire and Protective Equipment:

  • Wear layers in case the weather changes during the work day. You may want to bring a change of clothes.
  • Long pants and close-toed shoes are required on the construction site. Wear shoes that are comfortable, as you will be on your feet for most of the day.
  • You are welcome to bring your own hand tools/tool belt and work gloves, but it isn’t necessary.
  • Safety and protective equipment (masks, gloves, goggles, earplugs, and hard hats) will be available on site. You are welcome to bring your own but it must pass an inspection by the site supervisor in order to be used.

Other things to know before you volunteer:

  • Be ready to learn and ask questions.
  • Stay hydrated! We provide water; please bring a refillable water bottle if you can.
  • We love it when volunteers wear Habitat shirts on the jobsite and we’ll give you one on your first day. It’s not a requirement, however.
  • There will be Habitat staff and/or CP+ Volunteers* on-site with you at all times. You won’t ever be left alone to figure things out.

*If you have a higher skill level when you start with us, you may be asked to consider becoming a Competent Person Plus Volunteer. OSHA’s definition of “Competent Person” is one who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions that are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees, and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them. Habitat has an online course for Competent Person certification and also provides First Aid training and ongoing safety training to our CP+ volunteers.
